Seattle: Baker Street Theatre

Baker Street Theatre [Redmond]

Medium Theatre • 13443 NE 81st Street • Danny Kale, owner, Silvia Hart, manager • Bias against the rich • LTG NA/UCAS-SEA 11206-778-89

Baker Street Theatre is a clever play on words, fitting for the business. Once a prominent opera house, half the building was demolished at some point, leaving only the stage and its wings intact. The theatre opens onto 81st Street – there is no Baker Street in Seattle — and there is limited paid seating on decent benches, but people are encouraged to bring chairs and sit on the sidewalk, or watch from the roofs across the street or next to the building.

Danny Kale, the founder and owner, bought the small building adjacent to the theatre to serve as the storage and offices, while the original stage and equipment is used to put on productions. The actors and crew are all locals to the neighborhood, mostly SINless. Whether Silvia is directing classics or her own plays, the productions are often entertaining.

> Baker Street isn’t in as bad a shape as Danny would have you believe. Sure, the place looks like it’s gonna fall down any minute, but that half building is rock-solid and the tech equipment is pretty good, too. We don’t much like rich kids hanging around, but it’s becoming a hot spot for corp kids who want to slum it.

> So where’s the cred, eh? Two nuyen a seat doesn’t net you much profit. How can they afford the place, the equipment, costumes, what have ya?
> Curious Greg

> Go look you up a book sometime, Curious. Guy by the name of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote some stories about a guy named Sherlock Holmes, big detective. Had a group of street kids and bums called the Baker Street Irregulars, did some tasks for him, gathered some info. 10’ll get you 20, there are some runners out there who pay big cred for the info the modern Irregulars pick up. When’s the last time you ever really noticed a bum?
